Climbing at the Riverside Quarry

What better way to start off a new year than with some outdoor activities with good friends?! On New Years day, a group of friends and I went out to do some sport climbing at the Riverside Quarry.

This abandoned quarry, until recently primarily a practice aid-climbing wall, has been converted into one of Southern California’s most intriguing sport climbing resources. The crag’s specialty: super-long, single-pitch, bolted routes (up to 170′!), ranging in difficulty from about 5.8 to 5.14a.Β The granite is very high quality and has many unique features due to the early quarrying operations. A lot of the climbs have key holds reinforced with glue and more than a few climbs have holds drilled or chipped. This is mostly a sport climbing area, with chains or other suitable anchors at the top of almost every climb.Β There are so many climbs here that crowds are sparse.

This is a popular area for dirt bikers and four-wheeler’s; on the weekends it can get really busy and noisy. Β Due to its close proximity to Riverside and other surrounding cities, there is a lot of trash, junked cars, graffiti and random other pieces of junk that no one wants anymore. If you are looking for a beautiful, quiet place to climb, this is definitely not it. If you are looking for an afternoon of fun climbing on good rock this is your ticket.

The Quarry is a great place to learn if you are new to outdoor climbing.

The four of us, Eric Rich Ben and I, drove out to Riverside to ring in the new year. The Quarry is only about an hours drive from LA, depending on traffic of course. It was chilly, but it turned out being a pretty perfect day for climbing. I was feeling a little under the weather and battling a cold but that wasn’t going to stop me from climbing!

  1. Beautiful photos April! And such a great experience it appears too for all. Loved the explanation of the place too as well as what to expect there. Very adventurous and as always, your stories and photos come to life and make one feel as if he or she was there along with you. Excellent job. Can’t wait for more! Best, Jeff
